Acupuncture & East Asian Medicine

With its earliest roots stemming back over 6,000 years BCE, East Asian Medicine is one of the oldest practiced medical systems in the world. East Asian Medicine (which includes Traditional Chinese Medicine) refers to a variety of traditional methods used to promote balance and healing that originate from China, Japan, and Korea. By far, the most recognized and popularized component of East Asian Medicine in the West is Acupuncture. However, Acupuncture is just one of five branches of medicine which also includes Moxibustion, Herbal Medicine/Nutrition, Tuina, and Qi Gong.

Acupuncture

How does Acupuncture work? Acupuncture works by stimulating specific points on the body with acupuncture needles to correct imbalances in the flow of “qi” or energy through the “meridians” or energy pathways. And about those "needles”.....  As thin as a human hair, many people barely feel them as they are inserted.   All needles are one-time disposable and pre-sterilized.  Most people who say they are fearful of trying acupuncture due to the needles are quickly converted when they see how gentle, non-invasive and painless it can actually be.

HERBAL MEDICINE

Herbal Medicine is a healing practice that has been used across many cultures across the world throughout history.   Chinese Herbalism has been incorporated in their practices for over 5,000 years utilizing a wide array of herbs used in China and extensive texts & diagnostic tools.  Western herbalism draws from herbal traditions of Europe and the Americas, which emphasizes the therapeutic use of European and Native American Herbs and has seen a huge rise in practice in the United States.    Enthusiasm for this ancient form of medicine has never been greater than it is today as countless studies have helped science back the powerful, healing effects of herbs.   Many of the most advanced hospitals and clinics around the world, such as the Mayo Clinic, have recognized Herbal Medicine as an invaluable healing tool alone and in combination with western treatment as a Complimentary Therapy .

Herbal formulations come in a variety of form:  from loose herbal teas to capsules/tablets to alcohol extracted "tinctures."   At the Luma Center we offer a variety of options to accommodate the preference of the client, best form for the issue being treated and to maximize client compliance with treatment plan.    All the herbs we carry are specifically picked for sustainability and highest quality assurance.

Cupping

Cupping, an ancient therapeutic practice that has gained significant popularity in recent years, is a holistic healing technique used to promote overall well-being. Dating back thousands of years, cupping therapy has its roots in traditional Chinese medicine and has been adopted by various cultures around the world. Today, cupping is embraced by many as a means of promoting physical and mental health.
So, what is cupping exactly and what is it used for? Cupping involves placing specially designed cups on the skin to create a suction effect. Traditionally, the cups were made of bamboo or clay, but nowadays, practitioners primarily use glass, silicone, or plastic cups. The suction created by the cups draws the skin, superficial muscles, and underlying tissues upward into the cup. This suction stimulates blood flow, enhances circulation, and promotes the release of toxins from the body. Cupping therapy is employed to address a range of health concerns, both physical and emotional. One of the most common applications of cupping is for pain relief. It is believed to help with chronic back, neck, and shoulder pain, as well as muscle tension and sports injuries. By increasing blood flow and relaxing the muscles, cupping can alleviate discomfort and promote healing.

I initially came to the Luma Center for help with my infertility after trying to conceive for years and having several failed pregnancies. While skeptical that acupuncture could help me conceive, I felt if anything it would help my stress level to decrease and allow my body to recharge from all of the hormones. After several treatments, I became pregnant. During the pregnancy, I visited the Luma Center weekly, and I truly believe the treatment I received helped sustain this pregnancy. The staff was so supportive, helping me with my pregnancy anxiety, blood pressure, and body aches. Now, in postpartum, I rely on the Luma Center for my continued anxiety, hormone imbalance and residual physical issues. With a busy mom life, I look forward to my treatments to have a time for meditation, and peace; often stealing a nap without even knowing it. I never thought I could gain so much through acupuncture. Nika and Brianna have been so incredibly supportive and will forever be a part of the “pregnancy team” who helped my body to grow an amazing and healthy baby.
